She woke in his arms, ashamed to do so. In the night, they had turned to each other, and he was holding her tightly against him. He continued to sleep, and she managed to wiggle away at least a few inches to put some space between them before his eyes opened. He looked disoriented for a moment, and then he clearly remembered everything, because his gaze shuddered, and he pulled back from her. “Good morning, Elizabeth.”

“You may call me Lizzy.”

He shrugged. “Yes, I suppose. And you must call me Fitzwilliam, or Georgiana will never believe we hold true affection for each other.” He sounded like the idea was impossible.

It stung to have him so mocking, especially when she recalled how fervently he had pleaded for her to accept his proposal just two months before. Of course, he had also been ranting on about his reluctant love for her and how unsuitable she was, so perhaps he’d found a way to conquer his feelings after her rejection. It had no doubt helped him build a barrier to how he felt about her.

Uncertain why she was morose, Lizzy turned away from him and exited the bed. She saw to her morning needs as quickly as possible and was soon dressed and ready to join him. She’d worn her wedding dress yesterday for travel, not taking time to change from it, but today, she chose a more versatile muslin with brown stripes and a white apron. Her bonnet matched, and she felt as composed she ever would when they resumed their journey.

That night was a repeat of the previous one, though at a different inn. They went to sleep away from each other and woke the next morning holding each other. Lizzy was relieved to reach Pemberley that night, knowing she would have her own room once in residence, and the temptation of rolling into Darcy’s arms in the middle of the night would no longer be present.

She refused to acknowledge any sort of regret at the idea as she stepped from the carriage to find an older woman and a young girl with dark hair and dark eyes who must be Darcy’s sister waiting for them. “Elizabeth, this is my dear sister, Georgiana, and Mrs. Reynolds, our most competent housekeeper. Allow me to present Elizabeth Darcy,” he said to the other two women.

It was obvious he had written ahead to warn them, because they appeared unsurprised he’d shown up with a bride. Mrs. Reynolds and Georgiana both seemed excited, and Lizzy found herself relaxing for the first time in a few days. It didn’t take long for Georgiana’s warm manner to come through, and Lizzy was convinced within the first five minutes they would be close friends.

Shortly after that, Darcy left them ostensibly on business, but he entrusted Mrs. Reynolds to show Lizzy to her suite. She followed behind the other woman, who led her into a room that was twice the size of the one she shared with Jane at Longbourn, and far more luxurious.
